Inside a tiny cylinder, a small spherical capsule, approximately half the diameter of a BB, was struck by 192 laser beams.


These lasers did not strike the capsule directly but instead hit the inner wall of the cylinder, all in a time faster than light travels 10 feet. The resulting X-rays induced a fusion reaction in the fuel within the capsule.


This achievement isn't just about the fusion reaction - it's the first time that the fusion fuel stayed hot and dense enough, and round enough, for long enough, to ignite, producing more energy than what was initially deposited by the lasers.
